Medicaid is a jointly funded, Federal-State health care program for persons who are financially eligible. Medicaid provides care for acute medical needs and long-term care at home and nursing facilities. There are numerous community based programs, including adult day care, and assistance with local transportation.

Paying for long-term care in Florida, whether it be a nursing home, assisted living community, or home health care, is expensive. The average cost of a nursing home is $8,000 per month. Private health insurance policies generally don't pay for long-term care, and a few people purchase long-term care insurance policies. For those covered by Medicare, long-term care services are limited. For Floridians needing long-term care, Medicaid is the most common source of funding. Nearly 70% of nursing home costs in Florida are paid by Medicaid.

In Florida, Medicaid eligibility for long-term nursing home care is based on the assets and income of the Medicaid applicant, as well as the assets and income of the Medicaid applicant's spouse. If the Medicaid applicant or spouse has excess assets or income, there are legal steps that may allow the applicant to become Medicaid eligible without spending down all the assets and selling the home.  Under certain circumstances, assets can be transferred  to others to help establish Medicaid eligibility.
